Info
This is a sound and video project of a composition in which five Fiat 500s are the actors. Electronic sounds, a parking building or garage, eight loudspeakers and the audience play important parts as well... The first performance took place in Heerlen (NL) on Sunday March 23, 2003. With a lot of success, although there weren't hundreds of people that visited the performance. On two screens (4.5 x 5.5 m) the two videos were projected facing each other. From eight loudspeakers came the sounds of the cars and the electronic sounds. All that made it an impressive performance. For example: a centre wheel nut of a square centimeter became 4 meters big. Rhythmical, swiftly moving video clips. Both videos initially identical, differ slowly more and more from each other; the sounds not always synchronous to the videos. And gradually hell breaks out... The audience enthusiastic. The press praiseful. The idea behind this project/composition is the reproduction of "alienation" in the "interhuman relations and behaviour, feelings, et cetera" within our western society. Born December 2000 out of my work as a "sound 'n' word performer" (contents as well as form and kind of sounds) and my wish to do something artistically with the great sounds and the small appearance of the Fiat 500: a sound and vision performance of this car. I'm in love with the 500 since my childhood. Later on I added the video-element (so with moving pictures of the cars). Projections can be done everywhere, if suitable. ALSO the audience is a part of the composition/event: alienation between projection (sound and video) and audience, for the pictures (also mutual) and the sounds will become more and more a-synchronous during the "show" so that the audience will become confused and will look for what sound belongs to what picture. And that is also a sort of alienation. Main theme thus is: ALIENATION. "Secondary themes" are chilliness, stubborn indivi-dualism, superficiality in human contacts, the "society". It's NOT an attack, but "just" an observation that I try to translate into sounds and pictures. The idea of a Fiat 500 group in relation to the themes: small hearts with lovely faces that make a hell lot of noise together: they stand together and produce the sounds mentioned before, but they don't really communicate with each other. There is no real contact; they are on their own, in their own small world, while it only looks like they're talking to each other because of their very big mouths. By un-communicating they grow more and more apart from each other. So: superficiality, indivi-dualism, alienation. A blow-up of "modern man". Meanwhile there's a faster somewhat different version of the video's: "Memorandum 500 Tipo veloce". In that composition the alienation is more powerfull. Besides, "Memorandum 500" is very well fitted for exhibition in musea. A special loop version is available for continuous projection.
